La Kiuva - Vini e Selvaggina
La Kiuva of Arnad the homeland of the Lard of Arnad DOP. A cooperative that hold in itself a quite big variety in its selection, from wine of exclusively Aosta Valley vineyards to the wild game of the region.
The Kiuva is a cooperative company based in Arnad and founded in 1975. The grapes of the vine-growers of the lower Valle d'Aosta, currently 60, are conferred here and, thanks to a strong sense of community, they produce 70,000 bottles annually. The "Kiuva", in the Aosta Valley's dialect - called patois - is the pile of leaves that is prepared in the fall to use during the winter as fodder for goats. Kiuva is synonym of putting aside the good to consume it at the right time, it means being able to wait in order to receive something better. The members of Kiuva believe in the community and are committed to improve the conditions of many old vineyards of the area, which are in a state of semi-abandonment; they have already reconstituted a total of about 15 hectares of vineyards. The vineyard management is centralized and closely monitored since the very basic decisions: the choice of the varieties of clones, the elevation, exposure and position, the cultural practices, thinning and harvesting are determined by the soil characteristics and its geographical position. From these vineyards, all of small or very small extension, come the best grapes. All the vineyards are located between 380 and 500 meters on the sea level; the white and aromatic varieties are positioned in the higher-end while the vineyards that will give the grapes that will age in wood and that will have a greater structure and body are in the lowest.
